His curious portraits made up of fruit, vegetables and all kinds of objects make everyone smile, while they deceive the eye with amazing illusions. Much loved in the sixteenth century, when Maximilian II of Habsburg wanted him in Vienna as a councilor and court artist, vilified in the centuries to come and rediscovered only at the beginning of the twentieth century by Dada and Surrealists, Arcimboldo owes his fame above all to the famous Compound Heads. But the burlesque spirit of his inventions is only the most striking face of an artistic figure of great depth.
